The service forecasts up to 1 inch of snow will fall this evening above the 8,000-foot elevation of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. An upper level trough passing over the Big Island tonight will produce the snow showers.
The service also predicted easterly winds blowing at 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph. Temperatures will be in the upper 20s
Motorists are advised roads may be icy. Freezing fog could reduce visibility to less than 1/2 mile, according to the service.
As of 3:30 p.m., the Mauna Kea Access Road remained open, according to the Mauna Kea Weather Center.
A winter weather advisory means that periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties, according to the service.
